In Loving Memory
Dear Students, Staff, and Parents,
It is with profound sorrow that I write to inform you of the passing of our beloved high school faculty member, head football coach, and track coach, Mr. Robert Violante — known affectionately to many as “Coach V.” His unexpected loss is deeply felt across our entire school community, and we know that Bergenfield High School and our town will never be the same without him. He died in a tragic car accident on the way home from school yesterday.
Mr. Violante served the Bergenfield School District for the past 15 years, making a lasting impact both at Bergenfield High School and Jefferson Elementary School. Since 2011, he led our football team as head coach, transforming the program into a playoff contender after many years of struggle. He also served as head coach of the spring track team and began his career in the district as a special education teacher in an elementary behavioral disabilities classroom — where many fondly compared him to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character in Kindergarten Cop, a gentle giant guiding young children with care and strength.
“Coach V” was more than just a teacher and coach — he was a mentor, a father figure, and a true friend to so many. He always put students first and believed in helping them reach their highest potential. Known for his compassion, dedication, and quiet strength, he instilled discipline through tough love and created lasting bonds with those lucky enough to be in his presence. His heart of gold and unwavering support made him a beloved figure in our schools.
We understand that the news of Mr. Violante’s passing will deeply affect many of our students, staff, and families. Grief counselors will be available at the high school for anyone who wishes to speak with someone. If you feel your child would benefit from additional support, please don’t hesitate to contact the school at (201) 385-8600. Additionally, West Bergen Mental Health is providing us with a warmline that you can call to speak confidentially with a mental health clinician at 201-688-7098. Also, a Crisis Text Line is available at 741741 and you may call or text 988 as an additional resource.
We will share information about memorial services on the district website as it becomes available. We encourage everyone in our community to join us in honoring the memory of a truly remarkable educator and human being.
As we say goodbye to “Coach V,” let us honor his legacy by being champions for all children, showing kindness, compassion, and commitment in everything we do. Mr. Violante, your impact on this community is immeasurable. You were a devoted son, brother, uncle, teacher, coach, and friend — and you will be deeply missed.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Christopher M. Tully, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
